One of the most common expressions in America is to "Hang out" you can hear all the time " Hey I am going to hang out with my friends" or "Do you want to hang out with me tonight" which means to go out with friends or stay with the person for a while.
Most of the people in the United States will understand the meaning of expressions like " I have decide to hang up my teaching job" which means "quit" or I feel good vibes about or new secretary" . Vibes means " to feel good about something or somebody" . But what about the people who came to the Unites States from other countries? These is one of the biggest communication problems for a foreign people. So when native people talk to you with different expressions called "slang" you will have a question mark on your face as you try to figure out the meaning of what the other people said to you. How is that? It is common in gangs that if you want to get in to their circle, you have to follow specific rules, some of them are: to talk, act, and follow the same behavior as the people inside that gang.
Writing about this reminds me that when I was in Mexico, one of my friends from the United States came to visit me, then she was trying to speak Spanish, on of the most difficult parts for me was to explain her the meaning of the slang, because it is not easy to do the translate these expressions. Also I realized that when you talk your native language you don't talk in the proper way, you adopt expressions, but those are not the right way to talk.
Living in the US for the past four months has been a great experience to me for two reasons. The first reason is because I have been improving my English, how? Listening to other people, watching the news, attending school etc, and the second reason is because I have learned to understand the way people talk and the most common expressions that people use when they speak. When I arrived in the United States it was so difficult to understand people when they were using a slang in their conversations, I still asked to the people if they could repeat what they just said or if they could explain to me the meaning of the words that they are using when they speak. Some of the words and phrases used in the United States have similar meanings in Mexico, like "babe" which also has a different meaning depending on the context or to the person to whom the slang is
