In having a problem in life, an individual has two methods in figuring out how to solve it: logical or emotional. Logical methods mainly use knowledge obtained through institutionalized education, prior experiences, or one 's common sense. The emotional method involves how one feels about a human from being around him or her. People usually debate which method to use when trying to solve dilemmas like figuring out their partner for the rest or his or her life. To begin pointing out the author’s belief of using emotions over logic in making decisions, Cummings uses symbolism to unlock his philosophy of allowing one to value one 's heart over one 's head. The poetic device, symbolism, is perfectly expressed using single words with bigger meanings. By using words such as "kiss"(Cummings 4), "Spring" (Cummings 6), and "flowers (Cummings 10)", the reader is able to create a connection between the symbolic and emotional meanings. The speaker uses a word like "kiss" (4) to invoke the feeling of love rather than a definition of it. A kiss from an admired person is something that could rejuvenate a feeling of love one lost. A lyric poem is generally short with the speaker expressing personal thoughts and authentic feelings. The written piece by Cummings is a perfect example of what a lyric poem is supposed to be. The poem is sixteen lines of caring feelings and personal thoughts about the significant other. The reader could see the caring emotion of wanting his “lady” (10) to be happy when the speaker says “Don’t cry” (4). By saying this, a reader could interpret that the speaker would rather see their “lady” (10) happy and filled with life rather than sadness and eyes filled with tears. This alone could be seen as a way of showing that the speaker cares for who he wants to be with. The speaker’s view in a relationship is not only believed to be only be a mental relief for someone, but as well as a physical relief.
