Pirates and Kings: A Similar Path Taken by Macbeth and Sir Francis Drake Who has power? Some may imagine princesses, queens, parents, teachers, pirates, nobility when asked this. There are a lot of different forms of power and many different people can have it. This is a goal that has been sought after for centuries upon centuries. People of power can have good characteristics and do morally wrong things in a semi rational way. Two like people that fall into this are Sir Francis Drake and Macbeth from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. Both Macbeth and Drake were brave they both have fought in battles that men otherwise might not want to fight. Francis Drake’s bravery was fueled by ulterior motives, but it was bravery nonetheless. When his ship and crew was taken down we started to search out and kill spanish sailors(“Francis Drake, Sir”). Going into a fight takes a lot of courage and bravery and Drake did this over and over as a job for the Queen under her rule. Like Drake, Macbeth also was brave when serving under a ruler's order. Macbeth put his life on the line to serve his country the position of power he is in he had to work hard to get to earning the title he has. Some of the characters agree that Macbeth is brave "For brave Macbeth — well he deserves that name — Disdaining Fortune, with his brandish'd steel, Which smoked with bloody execution, Like valour's minion carved out his passage Till he faced the slave." He is ambition in getting the title of king after hearing from the witches that he would have great power. "I have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting ambition." (1.7.25-27.) He wanted to be king so bad that he and his wife very quickly moved up the ranks because the witches said he would be. His ambition made him do things such as kill, fraim, and lie his way to the life he wanted. The ambition that Sir Francis Drake had was motivated by revenge. His crew was taken and killed so now he kills the spanish ships for revenge(“Francis Drake, Sir”) . He has found a way to be paid to kill and plunder ships for revenge. He was ambitious enough to avenge his ship he was noticed and his ambition give him a better life even if it was
