In the year 517 B.C, a man named Laozi (Lao Tzu), a contributor of Taoism (Daoism), was born. Not a lot was known about his life, but it was known that he worked at the royal court during the Zhou dynasty. Because of the growing corruption in the palace, Laozi decided to leave, but before he left, Laozi left behind his will, widely recognized today as the Tao Te Ching. Throughout history, there has been a battle for China’s most dominant religion. The two contenders were Taoism and Confucianism.…
I agree with your assessment on the socio-economic model of today being similar to the Aryan social structure, perhaps not as a rigid but similar nonetheless. Although there are similarities, in modern day we have much more freedoms on who we associate with and who we chose to marry. The Aryan caste system was effective for what it was designed to do and keep people content with really to further inspirations. I could see some aspects of Confucius and Daoist that could be applicable in this case. Confucius teachings would be applicable for governing the people and the Way of Dao would be to keep people happy with the status quo without the desire to progress in life.…
Confucianism taught filial piety and respect for elders/ancestors. Confucianism was also used by the Chinese to create the civil service exams, which was the first bureaucracy based on merit rather than by social status. 9. Daoism was founded by Laozi. Daoism taught harmony, with no concept of a God.…
While Greece and Rome had centered around politics and government ideas, classical China focuses on family and leadership from the gods. Folk beliefs, Confucianism, and Taoism led to classical Chinese characteristics. In early times, Chinese performed rituals to soothe the nature Gods. Ancestors were worshipped for the communication with the Gods. These beliefs strengthened the family core.…
Confucius was an educated aristocrat seeking a political position to put his ideas into action, but was never given the opportunity. He believed that the moral example of superiors was the key in restoring social harmony. He believed that the human society consisted of unequal relationships and if the superior party acts with sincerity and genuine concern for others, the inferior party would submit to them, “Let him be final and kind to all; then they will be faithful to him. Let him advance the good and teach the incompetent; then they will eagerly seek to be virtuous.”.” He believed humans improve themselves and that education was important.…
The religion of Daoism all began as a belief in indigenous China back around 400 B.C.E. It was founded by a man named Lao Tzu, who promoted the idea of self-preservation. An important text in the Chinese culture known as the Daodejing was thought to be a hallowed book for the Daoist belief and many presume that it was Lao Tzu who wrote it. A tradition within the religion is to be at one with the Dao, which means the way, and strive for transcendence or physical immortality. At the heart of their religion, they hold qi to be the most significant term in their perspective. Qi essentially means life or energy, and shares aspects of spirituality along with physicality.…
Have you ever sat down and wondered what religions, other than Christianity, the human race follows? Christianity is a huge belief. It is so big that it leaves many other faiths in its shadows. One of those faiths being Daoism. Daoism, A.K.A Taoism, is a Chinese philosophy based on the writings of Lao-tzu, encouraging humbleness and religious devotion.…
Firstly, I will show how this idea is portrayed through the differences in religious lifestyles of Daoism, Confucianism and Buddhism. Secondly, I will develop this idea by comparing the characteristics of the Confucianist “hero,” Judge Dee, and the Daoist “villian,” Master Sun. Lastly, this idea will be shown through contrasting the differences in Confucianism and Daoism that are found among women throughout the…
It can be concluded, based on the writing of Mary Pat Fisher, Living Religions (2014), that, Confucianism and Daoism are opposites of each other. Both religions originate from China. Confucianism founded by Konq Qiu, is structured and is described as living a life of virtue. Daoism has no clear founder although credit is given to Laozi, is more care free and seeks to be one of nature and to live life as flowing water.…
The thinking of the Laozi was that people would be better off if they were less knowledgeable, curious, envious, and conflictive. In short, Daoism was hands-off. Often, Confucianism and Daoism challenge one another on several points. They used opposing methods to achieve the common goal of reassuring the people of China.…
Daoism and Confucianism are two antique Chinese approaches to existing. The former is based on the idea of harmonious and well-balanced living. The latter considers that it is necessary to set appropriate examples through five relationships, which are ruler and follower, older and younger relative, wife and husband, friend and friend, and father and son, for others to follow. Both these philosophies have some features of religion, but mostly they seem to oppose each other. Confucianism seems to be worldlier.…
EALC 275 PAPER 1 Comparison between a Confucian ruler and a Daoist ruler Donald Trump, the Republican nominee in 2016 for US president, has been addressing the radical Islamic terrorism issues in his election speech recently. According to BBC News on September 7, 2016, Donald Trump is planning to defeat the Islamic terrorists in 30 days when he comes to office in the White House. He is calling for more military weapons, more troops and planes to give IS a fast defeat. Even though it seems to be another audacious promise that Mr Trump has made, a lot of people would have to agree with him on fighting a political correct war given all these terrorist events happening around the world. One might argue that fighting the war against the Islamic…
In China's ancient culture, there were many schools of thought, but the most important two thoughts are Ru tradition from “The Analects” and Daoist School from “Tao Te Ching”, which were created by Confucius and Laozi. Confucius promotes a hierarchical and moral society based on propriety while Laozi promotes a classless and simple social life. Although they seem to be two contradictory propositions, they both claim to go back and rebuild the lost Golden Ages through the way. Confucius advocated going back to an ideal society where people followed propriety. This is shown in the text when Duke Jing of Qi asks Confucius about governing.…
Taoism is a religion most commonly seen in China. Taoism does share some similarities with two religions we have discussed previously, including Buddhism and Confucianism. This religion started with a man named Lao Tzu. Lao Tzu was born around 604 B.C and was known in the Taoism religion as “the Old Boy.” People were not very certain about Lao Tzu because there were different conspiracies about different parts of his life.…
Confucius and Lao Tzu were both philosophers in China. Their goals were to spread, and keep order, peace, and also harmony throughout China. Confucianism and Taoism (Daoism) are two totally different teachings that responded to disorder differently. Still to this day some Chinese thinkers study both philosophies. Both their teachings influenced the Chinese culture and religion.…
