Herd immunity is not enough to protect against the potential diseases that can harm the children because there are some kids that still remain unvaccinated, and they are at risk for contracting the disease as well as spreading it. There have been documented cases of Jewish parents that were allowed to exempt their children from vaccinations because it was against Jewish belief. But no where in the Torah, nor by any rabbis does Judaism object to vaccinations (Shurpin). Other parents that have joined sham religions such as the Congregation of Universal Wisdom claim that their religion prohibits them the use of vaccinations on them as well as their children. Many cases like these were taken to court, like Turner v. Liverpool Cent. School, but the child was admitted to kindergarten in the final ruling (Turner v. Liverpool Cent. School United States District Court). The parents’ beliefs should not result in the avoidable risk of death or lifelong disability for their children, who are unable to make their own informed decisions. In such cases, the state has an obligation to intervene to protect the infant from the consequences of that decision, when doing so is easy and safe. By making vaccinations mandatory, the government is protecting the children from questionable decisions that their parents may make if done …show more content…
The most recent review of research done on the MMR vaccine by the Cochrane organization, which is the more widely known vaccine thought to cause autism, has gone through a reviewing of many controlled trials. More than 15 million children took part in this research. No one could find evidence that vaccines are associated with autism (Anjali, et al). Vaccines do not stress the human body. Children are continuously exposed to foreign substances that activate their immune systems. In a manuscript published in Pediatrics in 2002, Dr. Paul Offit and colleagues estimated that infants could respond to about 10,000 vaccines at any one time ("Addressing Parents’ Concerns: Do Multiple Vaccines Overwhelm or Weaken the Infant’s Immune System"). It is approximated that 11 vaccines at once might require the attention of about 0.1 percent of the immune system. Seizures from vaccines do not cause long-term consequences. Rather, MMR-related seizures are actually less frequent than ones that occur as a direct result of the measles infection itself, which the MMR-vaccine provides resistance
