Sex trafficking has been an issue since the 1400’s. According to “The United Nations Department of Defense and Crime”, the definition of trafficking in persons’ means “the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. The older generations describe it as a time where kids could run and play all day with nothing to worry about. Nowadays families are split up. Broken up families can cause the kids in it to be defiant, mostly the teenagers. The internet has influenced kids in such a bad way. The younger they are, the more they get sucked into the web. Holly Austin Smith was one of these kids. She was only 14 when her horror story began. “He dropped his fist and continued to watch me. I looked around to see if anyone noticed the exchange. My best friend and her boyfriend had stopped at the Piercing Pagoda, my other friends loitering around them, and everyone else in the world continued to look after me, past me, or through me. Only this guy noticed my existence. It was a moment for which I had been waiting–a stranger who lived out there in the real world spotted me and invited me in. I was unsure of what to do, hesitant; yet I was equally afraid I might miss this opportunity–but for what? I didn’t know, but I wanted to find out” (Smith). Holly was thrown into the sex trafficking ring because she ran away with a man at the age of 14. Now, thankfully, she’s alive and well. Holly is an activist, she works to raise awareness of the dangers of sex trafficking. There are many, many ways to prevent it and keep everyone aware of the precautions you can take. One way to end this ring is by starting a club or community group. This can help neighbors get to know each other and recognize any strangers that come around. Looking for signs isn’t always easy, but it as well can help to catch anybody that's being abused. A couple of things that would be most evident is bruised or malnourishment. Paying attention to eye contact is as well a give away. When being sex trafficked the person in charge will always tell them what to say, if the person is talking and it sounds rehearsed something could be up.
