A skill that I learned in which has helped me establish a foundation is from the initial meeting explaining my role as a health coach and explain the outcome I hope to achieve together with my client. I apply O.A.R.S. to create an environment that creates a partnership where I get to know my client more, there desires and needs, and increase their autonomy by using this skill. Health coaching helps explore clients’ ambivalence (Butterworth et. al, 2006) uses motivational interviewing as a client-centered counseling style to explore and resolve any mixed feelings with the prospect of change. I applied motivational interviewing by using the skills I have gained from this course in focusing on the four principles: expressing empathy, develop discrepancy, rolling with resistance, and supporting self-efficacy. Additionally, exploring appreciative inquiry, it increased self-efficacy, self-awareness, and self-motivation to move in the direction of what works best with the client. I believe I have learned only the basis to health coaching and there is still so much more to learn and advance my knowledge
