As the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) launched for more than 60 years, more and more students receive their discounted lunch each day, and school lunch has become an essential nutrition resource for students. Therefor, researchers are exploring methods to improve the healthiness of the food students eat everyday, and they conducted a study to find out how to let students select healthier food in 2012. This study claims that the more time kids have to finish lunch, the heathier food they are determined to eat.
In this study, the researchers collected the data of food choice and the length of lunch time from six schooldays throughout the country from 2011 to 2012. They found that, compared with kids who have more than 25 minutes for lunch, around 14% less kids will select a fruit when they have less than 20 minutes to eat. First of all, eating unhealthy food, like sandwich, pizza and burger, will cost less time for kids to finish it. Secondly, less lunch time may cause kids to increase their stress during eating, which could also be a reason for the correlation. Because study has demonstrated that sugar and fat, which is rich in soft drink and fast food, could help people to clam down, eating unhealthier food may help kids lower the level of their anxiety.
