“According to a Florida Department of Education survey more than 21,000 drivers illegally passed school buses on a one day survey.” In a 180 day school year that is already 3,780,000 violations. Imagine how many lives are affected by this number. A major problem in the United States today is that drivers will not stop for school buses because of too many unreasonable excuses such as not knowing when, why, or how to stop for a school bus. Buses have signals that people don't pay attention to while on the road such as bright red lights at the rear end of the bus and a reflective red stop sign located at the right side of the bus. These are not there for decoration, they are there to catch the attention of other surrounding drivers. They are red for a reason, when you see red what do you do? You stop, it’s a simple concept of stopping on red that could make all the difference.

Starting off with the passing of a bus, ten school districts across Michigan have been starting a campaign for an LED message alert system that may become a requirement in state law. Which is intended to reduce the number illegal passing incidents. State Representative Holly Hughes has been an advocate of installing additional lighting on the back of school buses to reduce the number of vehicle pass-bye. The school districts have added an LED display system, called Driver Alert Lighting System, to the warning light system of the bus, to see if it will reduce pass-bye. The systems were donated by Safe Fleet Bus & Rail and is basically a message board, once the bus driver slows the bus and puts the overhead yellow lights on, a sign in the middle of the back door says “CAUTION STOPPING.” Then, when the bus driver stops and opens the entrance door, and the red lights come on, the sign flashes the words “STOP” and “DO NOT
