Scandium was found in 1879, when Lars Fredrik Nilson and his team examined the minerals euxenite and gadolinite. This discovery took place in Scandinavia, which is where it got its name. We were first able to make it in low quantities, starting in the year 1937, with applications being found in 1970s.
