For the peer reflection project, I interviewed Alexis Dowdell about the time her family adopted her cousin, Rochell. I thought this process was very interesting. Interviewing someone I never spoke to before was new. Even though this was a different experience, I was not nervous or overthinking about the right approach. I felt the right approach to interview Alexis was to be myself.…
The first skill that was used to engage my client was using an open ended question at the beginning of my interview. According to Hohman (2002), “open-ended questions are those that have a variety of possible answers and do not limit the client” (p.20) using this strategy allows the client to explore his own thoughts and it encourages the client to do most of the talking. I started my conversation with my client by asking a simple open question for example “how was his day going ?” later I saw myself asking deeper questions such as “You mention that your brother is an alcoholic, how is your relationship with your brother?” this allowed me to listen to my client story in his own words and to keep the interviewing flowing.…
• Identify two areas in which you were effective (and why) and one or two areas you should improve (and why). In simulation this week, I was effective in remembering the majority of the steps for the head to toe (I always seem to forget orientation and capillary refill). I quickly realized at the end if I had left out any steps and by the end of simulation I felt much more confident in completing a head to toe exam. I also did a good job of noticing what my peers missed during their head to toe exam.…
I truly believe that our nation has definitely made progress in the area of racial injustice. One aspect that clearly demonstrates my belief is the fact that segregation and restrictions no longer exist in public. For example, our schools, workplaces, hospitals, basically any functional facility, is freely open for anyone of any race to use and we can all sit together in one room; this is something that never happened in the past and was a critical issue for the longest time. For me to look around my classroom and to see my classmates, as well as myself, sit beside each other in a peaceful manner makes me grateful that we have reached that state as a society. Along with that idea, in general, I believe people of today are more respectful and understanding of cultural differences than in the past.…
Practicum Reflection During my education courses I had learned many different concepts, teaching strategies, and covered numerous topics involving the process of teaching. For the first time I was able to put everything I had learned into practice. My practicum was one of the best learning experiences I have experienced as a student. I learn the best when I am doing something hands on, so for me to actually be able to teach and take over the classes I was able to learn a lot.…
