STEM cells are a class of undifferentiated cells from multicellular organisms in their embryonic stage that are capable of giving rise to indefinitely more cells of the same type. STEM cells are classified into two main categories: adult STEM cells, which act as repair systems of the brain, blood, and muscle, and embryonic STEM cells, which are produced when newly fertilized eggs are divided. (American Medical Association) Research about the topic of embryonic STEM cells (ESC) began in 1998 when biologist, James Thomson, and his colleagues reported methods in which the derivation of cells from blastocysts and fetal tissue possessed the ability to differentiate into cells of all tissues in the human body. Since then, scientists are only now beginning to develop innovative cell replacement strategies to rebuild tissues and restore critical functions of the diseased or damaged human body. (National Institutes of Health) In order to recreate functioning organs, geneticists …show more content…
Bush restricted all federal funding for scientific research regarding STEMS cells obtained from human embryos, sparking great controversy. This act forced all laboratories examining these cells to raise all funds solely on their own, dramatically slowing the study of STEM cells. In an interview, Bush stated, “My position on these issues is shaped by deeply held beliefs. I also believe human life is a sacred gift from our creator.” (TIME) Yet in the March of 2009, current president of the United States, Barack Obama overruled Bush’s veto and led the forefront of the embryonic STEM cell research movement. Protestors in support of STEM cells argue that since the embryonic cells used for research are usually harvested five to seven days after conception, no lives are being lost. This undertaking enraged President Bush and his advocates because in their eyes, the technology required abortion of human life. (CBS News) According to Kenneth Ham, founder of Answers in Genesis, which is an apologetics ministry, dedicated helping Christians defend their faith, many involved with the research of embryonic stem cells cannot fully understand the effects of STEM cells because they do not believe that life begins at conception. Ham studied at the Queensland University of Technology for five years, earning his bachelor degree in Applied Science. In February of 2014, Ham debated American science educator and engineer Bill Nye (popularly known as "Bill
