Respiratory Syncytial Virus, also known as RSV is a disease that causes infections of the lungs and respiratory tract. It is a very common infectious disease. It is so common that most children that have it were infected by the age of two. That does not mean adults can’t catch it so beware. In adults and healthy children, RSV symptoms are mild and mimic the common cold. In some people, like those with very weak immune symptoms, RSV can be very severe.
As I stated earlier, the symptoms for Respiratory Syncytial Virus May mimic those of the common cold in healthy children and adults. These Symptoms include mild headaches, dry cough, sore throat, congestion, and low-grade fevers. In severe cases however, like with people with weak immune symptoms or premature infants, RSV symptoms may include fever, severe cough, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and even cyanosis. Most children and adults recover in one to two weeks, although some may have repeated wheezing.

Children that attend school have a higher risk of exposure to RSV. The fall through the end of spring is considered RSV season because this is when most outbreaks happen. Even though in adults and healthy children, RSV is less severe, there are groups of people who can have life threatening RSV. These groups are premature infants, young children with congenital heart or lung disease, children with weak immune symptoms, older adults, adults with asthma, and people with immunodeficiencies.
