This is known as tribalism, which is the practice of humans creating cultural groups based on common beliefs and norms. They think that girls shouldn't be aloud to fight or get dirty. In the story, West Side Story, before the gang fight, Anybody is trying to warn Tony but he tells her to scram. In the movie, West Side Story, before the fight Anybody says, "BUT THE GANG!" And Tony says, "You're a girl! be a girl and beat it!"This kind of separation shows more in West Side Story than it does in Romeo and Juliet because it's not like they can make the girls in each family disappear. In the Romeo and Juliet story, the girls don't have a say in who they marry. The parents get to choose who their daughter marries.
