If we were to describe what the emotion of romantic love was, we would acquire many definitions of it, as romantic love is a subjective measure. But, if we had to briefly describe romantic love, it would be the emotional force that has a major influence in determining an individual’s mental health. There are many other interpretations of it, such as the functionalist interpretation and the conflict interpretation. If we were to use a functionalist interpretation on the emotion of romantic love, one would see a relationship as a kind of society. In this two person society, each person contributes their part into this society, filling the needs that are requested by this society. This is because it fits my perspective on how romantic love should work. With a conflict interpretation, it relies only on turning people into resources, and that’s dehumanizing. A person is worth a lot more than their resources, or their race and gender. When you use a functionalist interpretation, it ignores race or gender, and focuses more on the concept of interdependence, which plays an important role in relationships, and if both people are emotionally invested in each other, they will have a strong bond. You can tell if a relationship won’t work because, like society, it will break apart if the relationship is one-sided. While there are examples where using a conflict’s interpretation is more accurate, romantic love can be generally looked at with more accuracy using a functionalist’s
