The ever-changing role of technology has surely changed the generations and the way we interact with one another. As described in Sharon Moalem’s essay on epigenetics, “Changing Our Genes: How Trauma, Bullying and Royal Jelly Alter Our Genetic Destiny," researchers have uncovered the relationship between environmental changes and the impact these changes can have on future generations. Carrying that theory out just a little further, why can’t the role of technology today affect future generations? According to Moalem, individual genes can be turned off and on by our life experiences – called epigenetics. In the book “Modern Romance” by Aziz Ansari, it describes the changes in modern romance, sexting being one of the more popular ones. Many people use their phones to take cute family pictures or send a text message to ask someone where they are at. The generations have been changing the ways cell phones are being used. In Moalem’s essay, he states, “Until very recently, we’ve been thinking and speaking about the serious and long-term ramifications of bullying in predominately psychological terms” (Moalem 281). Many children and teenagers are using their phones for social media purposes, but don’t realize the negative effects it can have.
