Wade court case which ruled in favor of pro-choice, but America’s battles with the right to abort actually started in the 1800s. In 1856, Dr. Horatio Storer set up a national drive through the American Medical Association to make all abortions legal. After this point abortions stayed banned until the early 1920s when the birth control movement was on the rise. In 1963 the society for human abortion opened against the law, giving women information on abortions. By 1967 Colorado is the first state to liberate their abortion laws. Coming closer to Roe vs. Wade, in the year 1970 Alaska, Hawaii, New York, and Washington repeal bans on abortion after viability, making abortion available at the request of a woman and her doctor up to 24 weeks (Whittington) After the infamous Roe vs. Wade, there has been many other court cases come up trying to overturn it, which have all been turned down up to now. A woman who lacks the ability to manage her fertility lacks the ability to manage her own life, and banning abortion would be a direct violation of a woman’s privacy. The main reason most people want abortion banned is because they think a fetus is a mortal and it is religiously as well as morally wrong to kill what they believe to be living. Not all people in America are christians, though. Take away that aspect of it and there is no real argument against abortion. Morality is about the wellbeing of real live beings who can feel pleasure and pain, preference and intention, who at their most complex can live in relation to other beings, exchange emotion and delight in their own existence. With that being said, real people count more than potential or hypothetical people (Tarico).
Abortion has came a long way in the past 200 years, and is still being defended to this very day. There are so many reasons why it was ruled legal in the United States including the fact it reduces our risk of overpopulation, sometimes abortions are needed to ensure the well being and survival of the mother, and for the simple fact that it is a private matter of moral opinion rather than a solid yes or no that should be decided by biased men in a courtroom.
