Ferdman. Reading through this article I could spot multiple instances where concepts from Schwalbe’s article could be applied. A quote from the article states that “A quarter of the country believes that the most important reason inequality exists is that some people (the rich) work harder than other people (the poor)” through this we can clearly see the concept of creating powerful virtual selves from Schwalbe. The rich use a virtual since that they work so much harder than the poor and that’s why they make more money, and that the poor are poor because they are lazy. This is not usually the case as the article explains many poor people don’t get the luxuries that rich people have, such as being able to take weekends off. Another concept that we can distinguish from the article is the point of Controlling network access. The article talks about how the rich are getting richer and the wages for the poor are staying the same. This is a form of boundary maintenance because the rich control all the capital and network access to making big money. You can see this in CEO’s of large companies as well as in the stock market where rich investors get richer off the expense of smaller …show more content…
The article was written by the associated press of the Washington post and titled, “Kenya Women March for Right to Wear Mini-Skirts.” Similar to the other two articles we can use Schwalbe’s article to distinguish different concepts dealing with inequality. In article by the Washington post a man talks about how woman should not wear many skirts because it would seduce him. This in a since could be seen as Defensive othering among Subordinates, because the man has a problem that he cannot control his sexual emotions and desires, instead of making himself the bad guy, he places the blame on the women for wearing mini-skirts and seducing him. The major thing we can see throughout this whole article is the concept of oppressive othering, and in this case we can see it because the men are establishing a dominant role and that the women of Kenya are superior inferior to the men, and because of this the women can dress the way they want but instead must dress the way the men want them too. Another concept from Schwalbe’s article is emotion management and a major way we see this is through the protest that the Kenya’s put on in order to demonstrate that they were not going to be rolled over anymore and to stand up for equal
