This disorder can also have different forms, such as kinetic stutter, where people have broken movements that start and stop at random. They often struggle to initiate movement and this is caused from damage to the basal ganglia located in the brain. While few of these patients were in a state of constant motion, most of them were left immobile and motionless. No medications were available in the 1960s to aid with the frozenness that was consuming these individuals.…

October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month. As we near October, I can't help but to think of reasons why dysautonomia (along with the abundance of medical conditions lying in the autonomic dysfunctions category) needs so much awareness in our communities. It's ridiculous how the amount of uneducated medical professionals outweigh the tens of millions of patients living with this life-altering illness who are spending an average of six years fighting to get a proper diagnosis so they can hopefully find relief from these horrid symptoms. However, even with a dysautonomia diagnosis, most physicians are so ill-informed of this term they lack the knowledge of effective treatments, especially emergency room specialists and "adult doctors".…

Sensory Processing Disorder involves a continuous interaction between the environment and the brain to perceive information through the seven senses (auditory, olfactory, tactile, visual, gustatory, proprioceptive, and vestibular) and create an appropriate response (Byrne, 2009; Katz, 2006; Miller et al., 2009; Parham & Mailloux, 2015; Walbam, 2013; Withrow, 2007 as cited in Goodman-Scott & Lambert, 2015, p. 275). This neurobiological process is critical in the first ten years of life because it is an accumulating progression from which the child’s nervous system will learn to interpret, process and respond to stimuli (as cited in Goodman-Scott & Lambert, 2015, p. 274). If the senses were to overreact, say in a crowded indoor playground, it can cause daunting and/or physically painful effects for children with auditory sensitivities (Goodman-Scott & Lambert, 2015, p. 274). Alternatively, if the vestibular system is underdeveloped in atypically maturing individuals, then they may twirl and spin to comfort themselves (Goodman-Scott & Lambert, 2015, p. 274).…
Dysarthria is a collective term used to describe a group of motor speech disorders. (17) It is caused by the underlying neurological deficits that impact the muscular control and execution of movement required for speech production. (18) Dysarthria is a common symptom of many neurological disorders, and the features of the speech dysfunction are distinctive. (17) Classic dysarthric presentations are characterised by a disturbance in the subsystems of speech, namely respiration, phonation, articulation, and resonance, resulting in reduced speech intelligibility and quality. (18) Dysarthria is a cardinal and salient clinical symptom in FRDA (2, 19, 20) with a prevalence of 91%.…
