Female crimes make up less than 20% of the crimes committed within the United States (Schwartz & Steffensmeier, 2005). In 2004 the UCR reported that women were accounted for roughly 25% for simple assaults and 21% of arrests for aggravated assaults. In 2004, the NCVS concluded that women accounted for 44% of simple assaults, 34% of aggravated assaults and 33% robbery victimizations (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2006). From the 1960’s to the present time, the % of female arrests has decreased to approximately 15% for homicide and aggravated assault and 10% for burglary and robbery crimes (Gender and Crime – Differences Between Male and Female Offending Patterns). Since the mid 1970’s, the % of female arrests for larceny, theft, fraud, forgery and embezzlement have been in the right in the range between 30 – 40 %. From the 1980’s to the 2000’s, offending rates for females has decreased from 3.1 to 1.6 %, while the offending rates for males also decreased from 20.8 to 11.3%. Females are victimized by more sexual assaults. Dating back to the 1980’s, the homicide victimization rate for both males and females was 16.1 homicides per 100,000 for males and 4.5 homicides pre 100,000 for females. From the years of 1980 to 2008, males were 6 times more likely to be victims of murder by other males. The statistics show 7.1% has been killed by an intimate, 56.4% have been killed by an acquaintance and 25.5% have been killed by a stranger. Females were victims of intimate killings and sex-related homicides. The statistics were 63.7% for intimate killings to 81.7% for sex-related homicides.
