Purpose
As my day started on Thursday, I couldn’t help, but feel nervous. I remembered the time I passed out during my last OR experience. I kept on praying that I wouldn’t pass out this time around. During the pre-op care it is important to verify patient. As health care workers, it is important to make sure that the right patient is present for surgery. The surgeon also comes in during pre-op care and discusses the surgery. The area of surgery is then marked to verify that the correct procedure is being done. The nurse also discussed any allergies with the patient because different medication would be used during the procedure. The nurse explained to the patient that it was important to remove any metals from the body during surgery. No jewelry should be kept on and the body should be free of piercings. The patient went on to verify that she had nothing to eat or drink after midnight of the procedure. The nurse verified the importance of this as it would help prevent and vomiting during or after surgery. The nurse also took the patients vital signs and attached an intravenous catheter (IV) to the patient that would be needed during surgery. The last thing the nurse made sure to do was to verify the informed consent was completed and all the patient’s questions were answered by the surgeon (Ignatavicius & Workman
