The course GENA1113 was a valuable learning experience to me. It stimulated my reflection on the meaning and purpose of university education, which are the major focus of the course. After completing the course, I think I have achieved the course objectives to a large extent.
2. Evaluating engagement in the course
Since I am not proficient in English, the required article reading was a difficult task to me. I spent a large amount of time in comprehending the passages before class. When we were in class sharing opinions about the articles, I was engaged because the articles actually helped me reflect on my own university life. Most probably, we will start to work and not go to any formal schools after university graduation. Therefore, university is the last place where we can have formal moral education. I still remember one group shared about the corruption problem in Korea in their presentation, which reminded me that distorted moral values can impose severe consequences to society. We are who control the future of society. Therefore, if we are not taught for correct values, the future society will be ruled without ethics. I believe it will be even harder to correct erroneous or instil correct values into students after their graduation from university. First, the course objectives could be more consistent. Currently, the course objectives include three domains: understanding of university education, roles of university students in society and spirit of New Asia (NA) College. However, I think it is better not to include the spirit of NA College because it is not very much relevant to the other parts of the course. Neither does it help enhance our spirit of NA College. Therefore, the course objectives would be more coherent if related areas are included in the course objectives, such as recognizing ethical codes in university education.
Second, the grading assessment could be more appropriate. Since the theme of the course is about university education, it would be more appropriate to assess students’ concept about university education and the corresponding roles of students than students’ presentation skills. Important as presentation skills are, they are not the main focus of the course. I believe writing reflective journals could be an appropriate method to show students’ reflection after reading the related articles. It could provide fairer grounds to students because introverted students who are shy to speak in class can have opportunities to express their ideas by
