First, Fugui reflects on the time he spent with his mother. Fugui explains, “My mother really loved me, so she would work with me in the fields”(48). Hua creates a calming tone through the words “My mother”. A mother often loves her child unconditionally and never turns her back on them. Fugui's mom does her best to keep loving her son even when he made terrible choices. Through the words “work with me” Hua creates a loving tone as Fugui's mother is taking time to help her son support their family. His mother spends time with him as they work and that time is important to both of them. Next, while contemplating accepting money from his wife, Fugui states, “Mother’s health made me worry more”(57). Hua develops an anxious tone through the words “worry more” and emphasizes the desperate situation Fugui is in. By taking money from his wife and getting a doctor, he could prolong his mother’s life. He could then continue to strengthen his bond with his mom. Finally, Fugui states, “When she died she didn't even know where I was”(82). Through the words “didn't even know” Hua creates a dismal tone. Fugui had to work to support his family. While he was working, “Fengxia would sit on the ridge and keep me company” (49). Through the words “keep me company” Hua develops a loving image and explains that Fugui was glad that Fenxgia would keep him company. Fugui (cut to here?) really enjoyed the time they spent together. Through their daily routine, Fugui and Fengxia built up a loving relationship together. Every day he spent quality time with her, like parents try to do with their children. Similarly, when Fengxia runs back home, Fugui exclaims, “I’m not sending Fengxia back, even if it means our whole family has to starve” (98). Hua produces a determined tone through the words “not sending Fengxia back”. These words reiterate that Fugui lost his daughter once and he wouldn't lose her again. He was concerned that if he let Fengxia go again that his relationship with her would dissolve completely. Fugui recognized that he was sparing himself from the devastation he would feel from being separated from his daughter again. (Talk about how when she dies all of his blood related family is dead) <-
