The influence of realism is first seen in the plays’ set design. The majority of the play takes place in the Helmer’s living room- decorated to look like a typical living room of the time period. Soft lighting complements the realistic use of props and furniture, giving it a natural feel. Furthermore, the costuming of the characters reflects the style of the time period as they wear things such as layered dresses, top hats, and overall conservative apparel. The natural and non-intrusive makeup compliments the costuming, providing a genuine and realistic feeling. Finally, the influence of realism is evident in the acting styles presented in the play. The actors exhibit realistic reactions and never break “the fourth wall”. By doing so, the audience feels as if they are peering into the lives of the characters, and feel as though they are witnessing real events. While watching the play, I found the utilization of realism enjoyable and effective, as it created a sense of witnessing true events unfold. Furthermore, the acting in the play aided in creating a realistic feeling as they engaged emotionally and logically. Likewise, I appreciate the connection between the title of the play and its meaning in the play, as in the end Nora reveals she has been living in a doll house, specifically Torvald’s dollhouse. Overall, even though the play varies from Ibsen's play in regards to small details, blocking, and expression, the play encapsulates a dramatic story in a realistic manner, making it enjoyable and easy to
