During my work placement I had been lucky enough to observe radiographers and doctors as part of a multiple disciplinary team which was a privilege and a real eye opener, as I was able to witness first-hand the pressures and fast paced environment of working in a medical field. I observed the doctors creating a rapport with a young patient diagnosed with leukaemia; the nurses were constantly on hand, reassuring the young patient. I was astonished by the skill, compassion and empathy shown by the doctors and radiographers whilst at the same time, carrying this out in an extremely professional manner.
I have done extensive research on the subject, to ensure that it would be a suitable career path for me. I read several publications, most notably the publications on "General Principles of Radiation Therapy”. This gave a detailed overview of radiotherapy and how advances were made over time, from Roentgen discovery of radiographs in 1895, the Curie family discovering radium in 1898 and radiologists drawing up treatment plans with a wax pencil on X-ray films, to MRI, combined CT, PET scanning and constructing intricate, computerized treatment plans based on 3-D images of the
