Racism in America In the last two centuries we have seen an increase of racism in America. Especially in the mid nineteen hundreds we saw a controversial issue with the separation of color. According to most of today’s students we have learned of many events that were considered the most racist of all time. That’s where Dr. King fought for equality: however, we still face the same racism today. Most of society thinks that racism has decreased; however, it has only increased. Racism in today’s society has been portrayed in discreet ways that still apply the same discrimination. Before, many used to be afraid or scared that they would be called out as racists. Even though most of us might think we are not racist we are. Symbolic Interactionism is a theoretical perspective that helps people interact with each other through symbols. For example, whenever we go to a restaurant and we see a sign that says “no baggy pants” or “no shirt, no service” who do we usually associate it with? That sign itself speaks for itself. Racism is highly associated with symbolic interactionism because that’s what people are doing now to get their message across. How is this a social problem? Racism is not gone, it’s still seen on a daily basis. Symbols such as public signs or even the the color of the maid in the cereal box can speak louder than
