Question 1: Given your personal, academic and career goals, outline three main reasons why you are applying for this opportunity.
On of the main reasons that I am applying for this opportunity stems from my desire to return to Africa. Two years ago I took part in a volunteer trip to South Africa that profoundly changed my life. I had the chance to work in an elementary school assisting in the construction of new buildings and helping the classroom teachers. What strategies will you use to meet such challenges successfully?
I feel that good communication is a key part in being successful. When working with so many other people in a new environment it is vital that everyone work together and communicates effectively. When everyone shares their needs and concerns it will allow all members of the team to overcome any challenges. Listening also becomes very important. For everyone to collaboratively come together each individual must take the time to listen to what others have to say. It is a new environment and every member for the group has something valuable to contribute.

They have welcomed me into their home and deserve to have their culture and traditions respected regardless of whether or not I personally agree with it. It’s important to not only abide by the cultural standards, but to understand where they come from and why they are used. Understanding leads to acceptance. While everyone will have their own personal and or professional values, when bringing a different value into a culture it is always important to check with the host community. To understand what is accepted and what is not. When in doubt about whether something is okay or not it is always beneficial to ask first so that no one is accidently offended. I will be a guest in their community and, as a guest must respect their standards. I would not appreciate it if someone came into my home and did not abide by my rules and expectations, so I feel that it is important to show the host community the same amount of respect I would want to
