Many writers immortalized the Queen in their poems, plays, and fictional texts. In addition, since Queen Elizabeth was a “connoisseur of literature and a person of remarkably wide learning” (Main 136), she became a patron of the arts. One of the artists who received the patronage of the Queen was William Shakespeare, one of the greatest English writers and minds in the history of literature. He made several contributions to this field in both form and content, such as the Shakespearian sonnets and words and phrases that are now part of the English language and vocabulary. This paper analyzes in detail the way gender roles are portrayed in his play The Tragedy of Macbeth in the characters of the Three Witches, Lady Macbeth, and Macbeth.
