"The use of psychotropic drugs by adult Americans increased 22 percent from 2001 to 2010, with one in five adults now taking at least one psychotropic medication.”(American psychology Association).The excessive amount of pharmaceuticals has made it easier for people to obtain medicinal products. That causes for patients to become reliant on previous medication. The longer they are on the drugs the more addictive they become and will one day have to find a stronger version. More drugs can also change the individual's personality and more importantly their long term health. With the more medication a person is prescribed the higher there is a risk of an adverse drug reaction. Adverse reactions are very dangerous and can even cause death.“more than 1.5 million people are hospitalized and more than 100,000 die each year from largely preventable adverse reactions to drugs.”(Worst Pills, Best Pills). Though there are minor side effects, such as nausea, it should not be taken lightly. Whenever a patient is prescribed a pill the person who prescribed it gets an incentive. "There is a huge financial incentive for psychiatrists to prescribe instead of doing psychotherapy..." It is a cheap way to get patients in and out of the medical offices. People see benefits in quick visits to the offices. They get in and out in a timely manner, leaving a generous amount of time to complete other tasks they need to get done. The patients go home knowing immediately what they may have.
