Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that involves a breakdown between thought, emotion, and behavior leading to faulty perception (AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION, 2017). People who suffer from this disease commonly show symptoms of hallucinations, delusions, and trouble concentrating (AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION, 2017). While there is no cure for this disease, it can be treated. Treatment options include undergoing a lobotomy, medications, and/or therapy. However, such treatments are not always helpful as everyone does not respond the same way to the various treatment…
Many people with schizophrenia do not take treatment because of the possible side effects and/or other reasons such as social stigma. After medication and the psychotic symptoms are in check, psychosocial therapy can be a great way to help deal with behavioral problems, such as difficulty with communication, motivation, self-care, and relationships (Berk,…
(2006), there are 4 key stages to CBT, begin a therapeutic alliance based on the patient’s perspective, developing other explanations for schizophrenia symptoms, minimizing the impact of positive and negative symptoms, and recommending alternatives to the medical model to address medication adherence. A therapeutic alliance requires the clinician to empathize, respect, and be honest with the patient (Turkington et al. 2006). The clinician should also be interested in learning about the patient’s beliefs and not opposing them. The relationship between the clinician and the patient should be the most important part of the treatment process, because the presence of hope and support are linked to effective treatment. Furthermore, Turkington et al.…
Intervention Outline PE is an individual therapy that is highly flexible and can be modified to fit the needs of clients from diverse backgrounds. PE is specifically designed to help clients process traumatic events and reduce trauma-induced psychological disturbances, making it one of the most effective interventions for individuals experiencing rape-related PTSD (Penn Behavioral Health, 2017). While the PE treatment program is structured, it can be modified in order to best assist an array of individuals. The most important aspect of the PE treatment program is building a strong foundation with the client that is based on a strong therapeutic relationship and clear, compelling rationale for treatment (Foa, 2007).…
Individuals may also try to find other ways to drown out the voices in their heads, including quick releases. These quick releases, such as alcohol and non-prescribed drugs are the main choices for individuals with Schizophrenia (Kerr & Paterson, 1999). Making sure that the individual does not consume either of these substances is very important. Alcohol paired with medication can often cause drowsiness, which affects their ability to operate (Kerr & Paterson, 1999). Substances, such as marijuana and other street drugs, often intensify their hallucinations and delusions and should ultimately be avoided (Kerr & Paterson, 1999).…
Healthcare professionals deal with violent outbreaks on a regular basis, and must be trained to manage such problems and violent behaviours. Crisis intervention programs are designed to teach staff intervention protocol, forms of verbal de-escalation, protective physical positioning, and physical containments or restraints, all without inducing harm on the target individual or surrounding people. These training programs are readily seen in a number of professional fields that often encounters people of violent nature, such as in police services, (private) school system, and healthcare settings. In fact, it is so crucial for these professionals to have basic crisis intervention skills that many agencies mandate their service professionals to…
The scientist I interviewed was Dr. Mario Beauregard, a neuroscientist at the University of Arizona. He studied neuroscience in University of Montreal and had received a bachelor and doctoral degrees. Besides these two degrees, he also received postdoctoral from University of Texas Medical school, Montreal Neurological Institute, and McGill University. Dr.Mario Beauregard has done numerous researches. The research that has made him stand out from all other neuroscientists was the 2007 research, Mind Really Does Matter: Evidence from Neuroimaging Studies of Emotional Self Regulation, Psychotherapy, and Placebo Effect.…
There are no clearly established methods to treat schizophrenia nor are there clearly established drugs to aid in the help of it. It is ultimately important to keep this in mind: A person‐centered approach to treating schizophrenia can facilitate establishing and maintaining a therapeutic alliance (Stevens, Dawson & Zummo, 2016). Through this relationship, clinicians can assist patients in understanding the clinical and personal benefits of being treated (Stevens, et al., 2016). The therapeutic alliance is ultimately key and rather antipsychotics are truly necessary is based upon what that therapist and that client…
While interning in New Britain Adult Probation, I observed how each probation officer had their own style when it came to counseling their clients. The more time I spent in adult probation and with different probation officers, I began to wonder how successful these tactics were. Therefore, I will be researching how effective - in terms of successful completion of probation and parole and low recidivism rates - different forms of counseling are to individuals on either probation or parole. The lower the recidivism rates are, the better because it shows that clients are being rehabilitated, thus their probation or parole was successful long term. My goal is to gain knowledge on the forms of counseling and to learn about which methods work best…
Schizophrenia is a psychotic disorder that can affect all aspects of a patient’s life and lead to suicide (APA, 2013). Because of this, psychiatrists often prescribe antipsychotic medications to treat symptoms (Chien, Mui, Gray, & Cheung, 2016). However, many patients do not adhere to the prescribed treatment, resulting in a multitude of problems including recurrence of symptoms and hospitalization (MacEwan et al., 2016). Adherence therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which patients discuss their feelings about their mental illness, treatment, and life (Chein et al, 2016). Adherence therapy is an effective addition to the medical treatment of schizophrenia because it results in improved outcomes for patients.…

The study was a part of a longitudinal, randomized, controlled trial that supported adolescent mothers in low-income families in parenting and self-development. In this paper, the study’s purpose was to evaluate the impact of this home-visiting intervention on delaying early complementary feeding among first-time, black, adolescent mothers who co-living with their own mothers (i.e. the child’s grandmother). The intervention…
I think that cognitive therapy method would best to help with schizophrenia because it uses a combination of techniques from different therapies based on therapist judgment. Biological therapy and a combination of antipsychotic drugs are also helpful by diminishing agitated behavior, decreasing hallucinations and improving social behavior. Also, cognitive-behavior therapy might help which this therapies help reduce self-defeating thoughts and helps change behavior.
