In Nauert’s article, he writes about how many different college students about their addictions to social media. Researchers reported that some of the students even compared their addiction to social media to people who struggle with an addiction to alcohol or drugs. The students also claimed when they go too long without social media they actually feel as if they were experiencing withdrawals. They describes things such as “frantically craving” food, feeling constant anxiety, feeling as if they can’t sit still, and even depression. After doing this, they were asked to blog about what it was like and the feelings they acquired throughout this time. They were also asked to mention their successes and failures during this period of time. Altogether, the students wrote over one hundred and ten thousand words. The woman who conducted the study, Susan D. Moeller, even claims that she was surprised at the number of students who admitted to being addicted to social media. Moeller notes that many of them included in their writing their fears of being without social media and losing touch with friends and family. Moeller states, “the students did complain about how boring it was to go anywhere and do anything without being plugged into music on their MP3 players.” Moeller also mentions that many of the students discussed how it was very difficult to ignore or avoid things such as the TV being on.
