Although Spiders provide a plethora of benefits to our community, they continue to be one of the most feared insects not only in the Northern Kentuckian area, but also throughout the world. In this project, I will hopefully come to a conclusion on why people generally fear spiders, which is an actual diagnosis called Arachnophobia. Spiders are in the arachnid class, which is the reason the condition is called Arachnophobia. Arachnophobia is usually defined as an abnormal or pathological fear of spiders. Maybe people refuse to let spiders into their property because they only know one good thing spiders provide. The last person I interviewed was a Highland Heights native named Todd Gurley. When I asked him, “What is your opinion on spiders in our community, and do you mind having them around your home?” his exact words were, “I know spiders are good at controlling those pesky insects around summer time, but I generally kill them anytime I see them around my house because I’ve always been afraid of them since a young boy.” I then asked him, “Are you aware of any benefits that spiders provide to our community other than killing insects?” He responded in a joking manner, “I do know they probably help other things, but honestly I have no clue what else spiders do for us.” I then went on to explain spiders help provide things such as anti-venom and bulletproof vests, which are important in a variety of ways. This was something he was not aware of, and he was quite surprised. He said, “Wow, I didn’t know spiders helped provide things like anti-venom and bulletproof vests… Both of those things sound very important to our community.” The interview concluded with him
