Time spent in the hospital can be a disruptive break in the patterns of their daily life. Incorporating activities that are developmentally appropriate can encourage the preschooler to be challenged and continue learning and growing, as well as promote family-centered care and compassionate nursing care. The coloring pages and big crayons, while are more independent activities, are a great talking point for a nurse when they come into the room. The preschooler is characterized by preoperational thoughts including egocentrism. They see things from their perspective. The nurse can relate to the child on a personal level by discussing their artwork and colored pages. The training toothbrush and toothpaste are a great health promotion item that the parent can oversee the teaching and use of. The early learning activity book is a great activity for the parent and child to do together. The book encourages the parent to work closely with the child and teach them about the shapes, letters, and numbers they are tracing. The last item is the medical play kit. The medical play items encourage the child to work out their fears in a controlled and creative way. This can be a great experience for the child as they create a trusting relationship with their healthcare professionals.
