There are potential moms who might have a drinking problem and refuse to quick drinking. It is important that they are educated on birth defects and the potential causes before they should consider having a child. There are different resources available if assistance is needed. Also, awareness about their own bodies and being able to understand if they start feeling different (i.e. missed period) is important, especially if they are sexually active. Ultimately both potential and pregnant mothers should not be afraid to go to the doctor. This is where they will learn about prenatal care and receive the appropriate treatment.
Prenatal care will cover the importance of nutritional needs of the baby and the mother. It is not only during pregnancy that the mother may have an affect on the child. The mother can breast feed or pump, and if alcohol is consumed during this time proper education is needed in order to avoid transferring alcohol to the baby. There is no research supporting an amount of alcohol that can be consumed and not harm the child, therefore it is healthier for the child if alcohol is not consumed until breastfeeding has subsided.
