Based on what you have learned through the lectures, resources, and readings to this point, please explain your view of the question: "Are people predestined to become addicted to chemicals?" Also, discuss whether you think it is possible to treat and/or cure addiction? The literature and lectures presented in this course describe several theories and models of substance use. Although genetic inheritance is sometimes cited as a strong indicator of future chemical dependence, many researchers are now maintaining that there is not one factor that solely contributes to substance abuse (Doweiko, 2012). Instead, a multi-causal model is being used to explain addiction (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). Although individuals with drug addictions may possess some of the same characteristics, the etiology and impetus can only be explained on an individual basis (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). Moreover, Doweiko (2012) states that although someone …show more content…
Many health care professionals have recently adopted the public health model, which describes the three factors of addiction as the “agent” (the drug itself), the host/person, and the environment (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). According to this model, there are several aspects within the host that can influence substance abuse. These risk factors may include the individual’s genetic structure, family history, cognitive state, and personality (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). Moreover, the social, cultural, political, and economic characteristics of one’s environment also affect the likelihood that an agent will be appealing and/or readily available to the host (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). Like the public health model, many other models of substance abuse indicate several risk factors for developing an SUD beyond one’s genetic
