The diagnostic assessment are done by reputable a mental health professional. Next the psychologist implements sessions of psychotherapy and form a diagnosis. For a person to become a candidate for gender reassignment surgery, they must be diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder. The next stage is the real life experience. This stage consists of the individual living completely as the desired gender for a minimum of one year. The transgendered person will begin hormone therapy. All of these step and requirement are necessary for the surgeon to approve the procedure and to know without doubt the patients feeling are genuine. The surgeon must receive two letters of recommendation from the mental healthcare professional and hormone prescribing doctor. After twelve month of hormone therapy and real life living the individual is eligible for gender reassignment surgery. The patient will choose a surgical team that would consist of an urologist gynecologist, and a plastic surgeon.
Once the surgery is done the individual has to deal with the legal aspects of having their gender reassigned. They must file court papers; have their birth certificate and social security number amended. They must also publish a notice in the newspaper.
Some of the social effects they may experience after the surgery are housing issues. Property owners may not want to rent or sell to a reassigned transgender.
