A social worker will become very familiar with other resources in order to refer their service users to. Social workers need to be able to address legal issues, for example, providing reports in court in order to determine the best outcome possible in relation to their clients.

When visiting a child in their home you are required to assess the degree of danger to which the individual is potentially exposed too. This can be quite stressful and put a social worker under a lot of pressure as a child’s wellbeing is in their hands. A social worker will then need to make effective risk assessments and then make the decision as to whether perhaps a care package needs to be put in place to help develop parenting skills (for example), potentially the decision needs to be made to take the child out of home and into care or whether the child is perfectly safe and happy in their current home. They will need to have the confidence to confront these challenging situations, critical thinking and analysis are vital key skills to have been overcoming these sort of challenges.
