(2012), Leininger’s Culture Care Theory plays a significant role in home nursing. The authors indicated that home care nurses have the ability to reinforce self-care in the home environment related to diet, medication regimens, and level of activities. For nurses to accomplish their job in home nursing, nurses need to consider the values and beliefs of the patient and those who are actively involved in the patient care. Ruschel et al. (2012) used the Sunrise Model to illustrate the use of preservation, accommodation, and remodeling in heart failure patients within home nursing. The authors indicated that preservation in home nursing occurs when the nurse acknowledges the patients values and beliefs and then incorporate them in the care plan. Accommodation is when the nurse is able to negotiate with the patient on self care activities in relation to cultural beliefs and values. An example of accommodation given in the article, was a nurse in the home care setting trying to get the patient to take regular walks by suggesting the patient take short frequent walks around the house or have a family take the patient out for short walks else where. Remodeling as described by Ruschel et al. (2012), is the process in which the nurse help the patient and the family change health patterns in order to improve their overall quality of life, such as changing their eating habits and/or increasing activities. The article concluded that home visits with heart failure patients’ enable nurses to have a clearer view of the patients’ living conditions due to cultural factors such as religion, environmental, worldview, and socioeconomic status. All of which, can result in better care planning and assisting the patient and family to better adapt to restrictions associated with having heart
