Depression is the leading most common disease among people especially adolescent girls. Women are twice as likely to experience depression as men are. Meaning that sometimes young girls and young women may have different views or opinions from what their family expected from them such as being gay. According to researcher Dr. Apu Chakroborty of University College in London, homosecxual people tend to experience mental health problems than heterosexual people. In addition, they are at risk at being victims of violence and bullies because of their sexual orientation. For some family this can be an immense problem because of their beliefs. This results to family rejection and negative family reactions or other loved ones regarding their sexual identity. It leads to negative outcomes of self-hate and lack of self love which ultimately leads to depression, and sometimes even suicide. Gay and lesbian teens have higher rates of suicidal thoughts and actions. Family members can feel so humiliated due to their young daughter’s or son’s decisions that they abandon them from their own family and make them feel disgraceful. Many people from the LGBT community also have one of the highest rates of homelessness because sometimes they are abandoned from their own home. Since not many parents are open minded in this generation, young gay women and men appear to have higher rates of some mental disorders. According to the Department of Health and Human Services, more than three million adolescents aged 12-17 reported at least one major depressive episode in the past year, and more than two million reported have severe depression that impeded their daily functioning. Studies shows that anxiety and depression are affecting kids behavior, their ability to learn, their social life, their relationships with family and friends. Their ability to learn have also lead them to doing poorly in their studies and even dropping out or getting home schooled. Their social life may affect them as well, such as all the peer pressure from their friends. Teens are willing to do anything to try to fit in in a certain group, this usually leads them to making the wrong choices, sometimes it starts of as a small problem but can easily turn into a big one. With all the peer pressure and influences that kids sometimes tends to focus on, they lose their ability to focus in class. This leads to lack of studies and an increase in getting low grades. Many of the peer pressure could also be related to being in a relationships and breakups. The emotional effects of a breakup can damage a teen pretty hard, depending on the length of the relationship, the intensity of the teen’s feelings and how the relationship ended.
