Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Or PTSD, is a very serious issue which affects millions of people in the U.S alone. You can develop the mental disorder through any traumatic event in your life. It is most commonly seen in veterans, policeman, firefighters, and rape or sexually abused victims. This horrid disease can affect several aspects throughout your life. It can cause you to lose relationships, your job, or even your life. The causes of this disease can be very extreme such as almost dying, to that of being bullied at a young age. The symptoms are similar to those of people who have depression, insomnia, bipolar disorder, or anxiety. They include, nightmares, hyperventilating, insomnia, changes in mood, flashbacks, and heart attacks. Often these symptoms are dismissed as panic attacks or just personality traits, and the person goes untreated as their condition progresses. These symptoms will affect a person's lifestyle and the relationships with family, friends, and spouses when not properly treated.
PTSD has short term and long term effects on a person. Short term effects only matter to the person for that day or week. Examples of these are nightmares, panic attacks, and loss of sleep. Although these symptoms seem small at the time they can ultimately develop into bigger problems.
The long term effects of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder are much more serious and often are not seen until later. A victim can suffer from heart attacks, drug addiction, and OSA. OSA, obstructive sleep apnea, is a condition in which breathing will stop during sleep. This can often lead to death in the patient. The medications they are described depend on how bad they have been affected and what exactly their symptoms are. If a person experiences more severe anxiety levels but can sleep better at night will receive higher dosage levels than someone who has less or no anxiety. Almost always if it necessary for the person to be medicated this form of help is highly effective, but sometimes people do not want to receive medical treatment for the condition because of religious beliefs, or the fact that they do not want the pills to change their behavior and personality
