Accompanying him are Alex, Julie, Charlie, Lisa, and him and Lisa’s baby boy, Gabriel. Alex and Miranda begin spending time together and a bond starts to form. On page 106, Alex asks Miranda if she has any spare clothes for Julie to borrow. They eventually begin talking about the past and how much they’ve come to miss it. Miranda, of course, wrote their conversation in their journal. “‘I miss friends,’ I said. ‘Friends. Family. Food. The three Fs.’ I smiled, but Alex didn’t smile back. ‘I miss home,’ he said. ‘And the feeling you got in a library carrel, like nothing in the world mattered except the book you were reading.’” Alex’s past is unknown to both Miranda and the audience, but it’s obvious his story isn’t the happiest.
