In the past 30 years, there has been a significant increase in childhood and adolescent obesity in Canada. Consequently, this may result in an increase in the chronic health problems of our future population. There are numerous reasons behind childhood and adolescent obesity such as sedentary lifestyles, poor nutritional education, and lack of proper role modelling.
Unhealthy lifestyles during childhood are an important issue to tackle because obesity at a young age strongly correlates with future health concerns. First and foremost, if you know children or younger people in your family or greater community, it would be beneficial to instigate them in physical activity as early as possible. The Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology recommends children 5-11 years performing at least 1 hour of physical activity daily.
Furthermore, volunteers are always needed to coach youth sports. This is an excellent way to be directly involved with the physical and the tactical portions of a sport you enjoy. Moreover, many parents lack nutritional and exercise knowledge, thus we can create organizations that strive to educate parents about important nutritional and exercise information for their children. Additionally, other organizations could provide volunteers that could run before and after school care with an emphasis in enjoyable, but physically demanding, activities for kids.
By now, I hope I have given all of you the facts and information needed to convince you in the importance of creating a healthier, nutritiously educated, and physically active Canada. Therefore, lets unify to combat childhood and adolescent obesity and there is no doubt in my mind that this initiative will make the future of Canada more promising.
