Horney begins describing individuals who face anxiety and often have a neurotic behavior. Individual’s that are being neurotic often are trapped in a self-defeating interpersonal style (Beaver 112). This style often wards off anxiety. According to Horney, those who are neurotic have three distinct interaction styles that they use to avoid anxiety. Horney called these styles moving toward people, moving against people and moving away from people (Beaver, 114). Individual’s who move toward people are often become dependent on others and have this desire of being accepted. This stage occurs in the latter years of life and is reached when people do not look back on their lives and dwell on mistakes, or feelings of regret for things they did or did not do. I agree with Erikson, when we hit a certain point in our life we all tend to look back at past experiences and either develops a sense of integrity or feelings of despair (Burger, 109). A person must go through each stage at a different point in their life. Each stage a person is faced with challenges that they must overcome.
