How I dealt with feeling terrible about myself is what led to these major traits. To further explain, competitive and insecure was a result from feeling directly bad about my lack of intelligence in my youth. Insecurity being a direct feeling from it and being competitive as a way to re evaluate my self worth. For my other traits it was simply a way to defeat my feelings of insecurity by reaching out and feeling useful to society in some way. It was also a way to combat the idea that one's worth is tied to only how good they are at something rather than their own unique individual qualities. For example we can take someone who has low self esteem and someone with high self esteem and give them scans to see their brain activity and make a statement on what happens to the brain when someone has low/high self esteem. To further explain in the text it states that someone who is more vulnerable to negative emotions have high activity in the prefrontal cortex. Scans help provide a interesting and physical way to measure possible personality traits. Lots of mental illnesses (anxiety & depression for example) are passed biologically from a parent to a child. (Usually associated with a lack of serotonin) Individuals with a mental illness are more likely to be introverted, tired, ect. With the use of the biological theory we can easily understand what contributes to those behaviors by looking into where it explores. However, biology can’t explain why people develop certain defense mechanisms. Those mechanisms are created through the environment and how one responds to it and what is more successful/easier. I say when it comes to evaluating my own personality and applying it to this theory it does fall somewhat short because I believe there is much more information in personally understanding my situation than what hormone is being
