While I am working to obtain my Master's, I also have a job as a baseball coach where I deal with a lot of different personalities from different backgrounds from various places around the world. On Wednesday May 2nd I imposed some of my values to the team. I spoke to them about the idea that preparation is key to success. I told the team that I believe you should work as hard as you can outside of the game. There were multiple times where I found that in a team setting my views were challenged. Another instance of myself having to defend my values was when talking to a small group of players on my team. A player was describing a play in a previous game where he believed he could have done more to help the time out by being safe on a particular play. He spoke to the fact that to do so he would have most likely hurt the opposing player at which point I told him he made the right decision. He then went on to tell me that with a team that he respected less he would not have had the internal conflict to hurt a player to allow himself to be safe. At that point I felt the team values were challenged. Concordia Baseball, being one of the values that I stated before means a couple different things. First it means always displaying sportsmanship and second it means to always play hard to win. This was probably one of the biggest challenges to my values I felt through the week. It is still bothering me now knowing that one of the players feels this way but looking back I think taking the time to more thoroughly understand his values would help me to better deal with the situation.
In the past week and a half, I have been able to evaluate some of my values but largely my biggest values were not challenged. Through this process of thinking of not only my values but other people's values, I was able to see how much understanding
