I participated in a program at school called APEX, which is a lot like job shadowing. I was involved with the engineering strand, so I was able to gain a lot of insight about the career. I am signed up to take Civil Engineering and Architecture, and Calculus senior year. I am also participating in an internship program through my school next year. I was a cheerleader freshman and sophomore year. Being the oldest on the team, I took on many leadership positions such as, teaching cheers and navigating the team through obstacles we approached. When I was a cheerleader, I volunteered at a carnival at one of Waukee’s elementary schools. My job was to manage one of the booths and teach kids a few cheers. I have also volunteered for the women shelter. I created a 3D model of their thrift store, and what it would look like when it was done being renovated. My volunteer work allowed them to save money, so they could precede with the renovation. I am currently in Pal PE and I am becoming a member of Best Buddies. They are both programs where students build relationships with disabled kids. We work together to find ways around their disabilities, so they can have fun and participate in most activities. During this experience, I was able to organize a time for our group to go ice skating. It was something different then what we would usually do, but everyone loved it. I believe I am an excellent candidate for the Coolidge Scholarship because of my dedication to my education and community. I hope to be one of your scholarship recipients, so I can continue succeed, improve, and become an accomplished engineer with the ability to change the
