Her liver enzymes, BUN, and creatinine levels all increased and her blood became a cesspool for microbes, including pseudomonas. She needed immediate skin grafting surgery to prevent the spread of the infection to her bone. I vividly recall extensively studying all her conditions and medications in an effort to understand each and every detail of her investigations, management, and prognosis. This dreadful experience taught me to mellow down my sensitivity and adopt strength. Through this tragedy, I discovered my immense passion for internal medicine, a field in which I would be able to study the human body in an integrated manner. Physicians must also be able to communicate well with not only their patients but also with their colleagues. They should be able to work well in teams where multiple minds are paired together for the utmost wellbeing of patients. I am highly fortunate to have received my medical training from a teaching hospital where my peers and I had the opportunity to work with both privileged and underprivileged patients. This instilled in me the skills necessary to work well with others and to communicate effectively with a variety of patients on a more intimate level, where I truly understood their problems and desires. I hope to train in a residency program that will help me refine my abilities and provide me with a stimulating environment with research possibilities, thus enabling me to become not only a skillful physician but also a good academician.
