Patrick Henry should have more Foreign Language Classes Learning new languages, such as German, French, or even Russian can be exciting for many students. However, Patrick Henry is a school that only offers one foreign language class for students to choose from. This is not fair to the students who might want an expansion on their choices. The majority of students at this school may not enjoy the only foreign language class that Patrick Henry offers. If this is true, why do we have Spanish as our only foreign language class?…
Being bilingual opens new horizons for several people in the world. If all people were bilingual, everyone would be able to communicate more fluently, without the need for translators or people stammering in attempt to talk in another language. Moreover, a second language can provide you with better business opportunities, like a job with a Latino country if you know Spanish or Latin. Overall, having even a few words from a second “lengua” stashed in your memory for later use can benefit you immensely in the future. First of all, you could be a translator.…

It was a sunny summer day, June 21, 2017 when i was headed to the hospital at exactly 4:00 pm. I was going to get surgery on my right ankle to take out some screws that were on my foot for over 6 six years. However, it was stressing about how i was going to be able to pass my Eng 102 dual enrollment class. It was stressing that i had 1 week left and had to work on an 2 page letter and a final essay that were due on the last day of class. At the age of twelve, I left the woman I love the most in Vietnam to start a new life with my dad in the United States. I was always wondering why my mom did not want to go with us, and our family could live together. But then as I have growing up, I realized that she sacrificed to stay there, so my dad can take care of me better. Remember the first day I went to an American middle school, I was clueless, difficulty in communication and the people around me have different cultures, and ethnicity. When in Vietnam, I felt so confident and proud of myself, but in United States, I started isolating people, I felt inferior and started developing a shell to cover myself from the world.…
Across the Oceans “Don’t ever forget where you came from; otherwise, you’ll never remember where you’re going.” Leaving my thirteen years behind, I flew away from Nepal in 2013 in a hope that I’ll prove myself in the future fulfilling the dreams that I dreamed as a child. Flying away felt like leaving a piece of myself in the place where I spent my whole childhood for the place where I was going to spend my adolescence and my adulthood. I came from a place where the lack of electricity, water sources, transportation, employment, and health service still exist. Being born in a place where my dad spent his childhood and adulthood struggling to get a proper meal for a day makes me think how lucky I was to get to come to the place where it lacks nothing.…

In high school, besides being a member of the National Honor Roll, taking Advanced Placement courses, and playing on the Varsity Girl’s tennis team, I also had a love for tutoring. I started tutoring my sister, friends’ siblings, and those struggling academically. As part of my community service during my undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley (UCB), I tutored at Willard Middle School because Willard students do not typically aspire to pursue a higher education. I hope I was able to instill an appreciation of science and influence them to attend college. I also enjoyed learning foreign languages.…
That is a fair point Kavetha. I would also like to add that by studying abroad, not only are we exposed to a multitude of cultures and atmospheres, but we also have access to the latest technological and courses not provided by local universities. For instance, in distinguished universities such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), never been heard before technologies are being researched such as bionic limbs and nano-architecture. These universities also have access to the newest gadgets and apparatus, and these instrument will often dominate the global economy in the next 5-10 years. By learning the latest instruments, students will improve their marketability in the economy by the time they graduate.…
As a student at Scappoose High School, I have been exposed to several new experiences and ideas. I have stretched the boundaries of my comfort zone by joining the school’s Doernbecher Fundraiser and being more open to new friendships. My friends, both acquaintances and lifelong friends, find it easy to come and talk with me about their feelings, and I listen and give advice where I can. They sense a trustworthy nature from me and I care about what they are going through.…
Have you ever wondered what is like for a no English speaking person to come to the United States for the first time? Let me walk you through my experience as a Hispanic moving into the United States. Is an experience I will never forget; I was in middle school in Puerto Rico when my mother told the family the news of us moving to Connecticut do to her finding a better career opportunity. It seemed like the idea of starting a new school in a new state was not enough considering it was not a Spanish speaking school. I was terrified.…
Many of you probably can speak more than one language or had taken foreign language class before, knowing another language has many benefits and can bring you many opportunities. The purpose of my speech is to persuade and encourage you all to learn a second language. I think I am qualified to speak about this topic because I do speak more than one language. Being able to speak fluently in Chinese has helped me a lot at work. I’m currently working in Kate Spade and selling handbags (kind expensive or decent brand).…
Compare and Contrast Since last century, sports became an inseparable part of many people’s lives all around the world, the problem of supporting dual career is now widespread. By the dual career “the challenge of combining a sports career with studies or work” (López de Subijana, 57) is meant. As a result, career assistance programs (CAP) were created in order to help students to get a higher education despite on the possible issues. As far as I am being a part of Boston Scholar Athletes organization, I have a practical ability to observe this problem on my own and talk about effectiveness of such a programs. After doing a research on investigating high-school student-athletes educational problems I came up with an understanding of the dual career barriers for athletes and the possible ways of reducing them.…
A good practise while learning a foreign language is the reflection. One has to think critically what are his/her own strengths and weaknesses in order to be able to improve and reach his/her objectives. The aim of this review is precisely this – I will expose the key factors of my English learning, then I will indicate the ways that I find most and less useful to learn a language, next I will list my strong points and my weak spots and finally I will give some ideas to ameliorate my command of English as a foreign language. I started studying English when I was six years old, which means I have been learning it for thirteen years. Until 2015, I studied it in two different environments: the school and a private academy.…
