I didn’t realize how low turnouts was a huge deal to our country until I had done some research for a civics assignment. During my research I have found some interesting reasons as to why Canada had such low voting turnouts. First of all, because we are too caught up in our own lives, we forget about the economy we live in and so we become too bothered to go out to voting stations and express our opinions. Secondly, we don’t vote because of political indifference. Many people simply have lack of interest towards politics, or aren’t very educated on the importance of it all. Last but not least, since Canada starts voting at such a young age, many young people are inexperienced and too immature to understand the serious impact upon voting. However in my opinion, I found these reasons to be lame excuses for our arrogance and ignorance for our country nowadays. Eligible voters shouldn’t give up their right to vote for such silly reasons when there are other countries who do not have this privilege and are fighting for this right every day. If you think about it, it’s quite unfair how we’re taking this privilege for granted. However, the result of low voting turnouts can change if people work together to inform one another about the importance of voting and the negative impact of low voting turnouts. Through learning civics, we also get to learn about our rights and duties while we get to explore other individuals’. I feel like I have benefitted really well from this course as I improved my knowledge and views on our government.
