The core values I follow are compassion, love, patience and prudence. Compassion is the emotion we feel in response to suffering. Love comes in many forms and is felt in many different states and attitudes. One may have love for life, for people, for animals, for beautiful things and so forth. Love can also be a virtue. I choose to use it as a virtue in this context. Love is “the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another”. (Merriam-Webster.com). My ethical perspective aligns closely with John Stuart Mill. He argued that utilitarianism is generally best in most cases. He loosely stated that telling a lie in one situation might be what is best for all but telling lies in general is wrong. He developed a four step analysis of ethical problems. First, one most identify the issue or action under consideration. Second, we must specify all who will be affected by our action. Third, we determine the consequences and fourth we weigh the good and the bad. The action is morally correct if the benefit is greater than the
